How do I obtain a Social Security number?

If you’re an international student in Washington interested in obtaining a Social Security number, the process is straightforward. First, you should check with your school to make sure that you are qualified to receive social security benefits in the United States. You must be a student who is a lawful alien (not a U.S. citizen or national) and has permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Once you have determined if you are eligible for a Social Security number, you will need to provide evidence of identity to the Office of the Inspector General. This can be a passport, birth certificate, or any other government-issued document that shows your name, date of birth, and current address. After submitting your documents, you will be required to complete and sign Form SS-5, the application for a Social Security number. On this form, you will need to provide information about your school, the type of visa you hold, and how long you have been living in the United States. Once the form has been submitted, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will review the paperwork and issue you a Social Security number. After that, you should receive a card in the mail confirming your number. You may also be required to present additional evidence of employment, such as a letter from an employer or a pay stub.
