What is the F-1 CPT program?

The F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program is a program that allows international students from foreign countries in F-1 visa status to participate in paid internship experiences in their field of study while in the US. These internships must be related to the student’s major and must be completed as part of the completion of the degree. The CPT program is typically approved in advance by the student’s college or university. It is important to note that the F-1 CPT program is designed for students who are pursuing degrees and not for those in the United States for employment purposes. The CPT program is beneficial for students who want to gain relevant work experience in their field of study prior to graduation. These internships also allow students to gain valuable skills and networks that they can utilize after they graduate. Additionally, the CPT program provides a unique opportunity to apply the knowledge and theories they are learning in the classroom to a real-world work experience. In order to be eligible for the F-1 CPT program, individuals must have successfully completed at least 9 months of academic study at the institution or university. The CPT program also requires that students obtain authorization from the Designated School Official at the school prior to participating in the CPT program. Furthermore, the F-1 CPT program limits the number of hours that an individual can work to 12 months total out of the duration of the student’s program.
