How do I become a U.S. citizen?

In order to become a U.S. citizen, you must go through the process of naturalization. Naturalization is the process by which an immigrant is granted citizenship. Naturalization takes place at a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office. The first step is obtaining permanent residency, which means that you are legally allowed to live and work in the United States. This is done through a variety of ways including family sponsorship, employment visas, and humanitarian programs. After obtaining a Green Card, you must have resided or “lived in” the United States as a lawful permanent resident for a minimum of five years. The second step is to apply for naturalization. To apply, you must be 18 years of age or over, and you must have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years. You must also demonstrate good moral character, pass a civics test, and establish a knowledge and understanding of the English language. In addition to this, an applicant must meet certain requirements regarding residence and physical presence in the United States and must take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America. Once the application is approved, you must attend a naturalization ceremony, where you will be officially granted U.S. citizenship. After you are granted citizenship, you will receive a Certificate of Naturalization and you will be allowed to vote in U.S. elections. Therefore, to become a U.S. citizen, you must first obtain permanent residency, apply for naturalization, and attend a naturalization ceremony. After this, you will officially gain U.S. citizenship!
