What is the citizenship test?

The citizenship test is a requirement for individuals who wish to become naturalized citizens of the United States in the state of Washington. To complete the citizenship process, applicants must pass a test that includes questions about US history, national holidays, and the US government. The questions are designed to test the applicant’s knowledge of the US Constitution, the US system of government, national symbols, US history and geography, and other aspects of American culture. The exam consists of 100 questions that cover topics such as the rights and responsibilities of US citizens, government policies and procedures, American history, and American democracy. To pass the test, applicants must correctly answer six out of ten multiple-choice questions. The exam is administered in English, but applicants are allowed to bring an interpreter with them if they need assistance. Individuals who take the citizenship test must also pass an English and civics test, which evaluates their ability to speak, read, and write in English. The test assesses the applicant’s knowledge of US history and civics, including understanding of the rights and responsibilities of US citizens and the principles, structure, and operations of the US government. Prior to taking the citizenship test, applicants must show proof of residence in the state of Washington and prove they have met the requirements of the recently revised Naturalization Act. Applicants must also prove they are at least 18 years old and have held a valid immigration status for at least five years.
