What is the Green Card?
The Green Card is a form of identification issued to non-citizens to authorize them to live and work in the United States. It is also known as a Permanent Resident Card. In Utah, the Green Card permits the holder to stay in the country for extended periods of time and provides certain rights and benefits. The Green Card is provided by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In order to receive a Green Card, a non-citizen will typically need to have a sponsor or petition for an immigrant visa from their home country. This visa will then be processed by USCIS and if approved, the holder will become a permanent resident. Those with a Green Card in Utah will have the same rights as U.S. citizens, with the exception of voting in elections. In addition, Green Card holders are also eligible for most government programs, including Social Security and Medicare. Living in Utah with a Green Card also means that holders will pay taxes just like U.S. citizens, however they cannot receive federal or state financial assistance. Moreover, holders may be eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship after a certain period of time, provided that they meet certain requirements.
