What are the requirements for becoming a U.S. citizen?
In order to become a U.S. citizen in North Carolina, a person must meet a variety of requirements set forth by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The most basic requirement is that the person must be a legal permanent resident with a valid Green Card. Additionally, the prospective citizen must be at least 18 years of age, have resided in the United States with a valid Green Card for a minimum of five years, and have physically resided in North Carolina for at least three months prior to filing the citizenship application. The applicant must also demonstration their knowledge of the English language, as well as an understanding of U.S. history and government. An English language exam and a civics test will be administered to the applicant to assess their knowledge. Furthermore, the applicant must be of good moral character by showing that they have not committed any serious or multiple misdemeanors. The final step is for the applicant to submit a completed Form N-400 to USCIS in order to file for citizenship. Once the form has been processed, the applicant will be invited to an interview where the USCIS immigration officer will review the case and determine the applicant’s eligibility for U.S. citizenship. Following the interview, a written or oral decision will be made by the immigration officer. If approved, the applicant will have to attend a sworn in ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance to become a U.S. citizen.
