What is a consular processing?

Consular processing is a route of applying for U.S. citizenship without having to travel to the United States. It is designed for non-residents who are currently living in a foreign country and are interested in becoming a U.S. citizen. To use this route, an individual must submit an application, called Form N-400, to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Once the form is submitted and accepted, the individual will be asked to go to a U.S. embassy or consulate in the country they are currently residing in for an interview. At the interview, the individual will be asked to provide proof of their identity and eligibility for citizenship. After the interview is concluded, the embassy or consulate will review the application and if approved, they will issue a Certificate of Citizenship. Once this certificate is obtained, it will allow the individual to travel to the United States, apply for a U.S. passport and become a citizen of the United States. It is important to note that consular processing can take awhile and the individual applying must remain in their current country throughout the process. In Indiana, any individual interested in obtaining citizenship through consular processing must go through the same steps as someone living in a foreign country. They must submit Form N-400 and provide proof of identity and eligibility for citizenship at their interview. Following that, they will receive a Certificate of Citizenship and be allowed to travel to the United States and apply for a U.S. passport.
