What is the naturalization interview?

The naturalization interview is the final step in the process of obtaining United States citizenship through naturalization. Naturalization is a legal process that grants foreign-born individuals the right to become U.S. citizens. During the naturalization interview, applicants are asked questions by an immigration officer to determine if they have met the requirements to become a U.S. citizen. These questions test applicants’ knowledge of English, U.S. government and history, and their moral characters. The naturalization interview is conducted at a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office, where applicants are expected to bring the required documentation to prove their identity and eligibility for citizenship. Applicants must bring the documents identified in their Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, including their proof of residence, identity, and naturalization requirements. During the interview, applicants will take an Oath of Allegiance and receive their Certificate of Naturalization. This document officially grants them United States citizenship. At the conclusion of the interview, applicants may also choose to register to vote or to apply for a U.S. passport. Once all of the documentation has been processed, new citizens are welcomed with a special ceremony where they officially become a U.S. citizen.
