How can I extend my stay in the U.S.?

One way to extend your stay in the U.S. is by applying for an adjustment of status. This application is filed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This application can be used to adjust an individual’s status from one nonimmigrant visa category to another nonimmigrant visa category. The individual must meet all requirements for the new visa and must demonstrate that they have a legitimate reason for needing to extend their stay in the U.S. In South Carolina, individuals who would like to become a citizen must apply for citizenship through naturalization. Naturalization is when a person who is not a U.S. citizen voluntarily goes through a process of becoming a U.S. citizen. In order to be eligible for naturalization, the individual must be at least 18 years old and must have lived in the United States for at least five years. In addition, the individual must have a green card and proof of good moral character. After the USCIS reviews the application, the individual may be called for an interview in which they must demonstrate their language ability, knowledge of U.S. history and civics, and support for the principles of the U.S. Constitution. Naturalization can take up to five years, and will require much documentation and evidence to receive approval. Ultimately, the best way to extend your stay in the U.S. is to apply for a visa extension or a change of status, if the individual has already been approved for a visa, and to look into applying for citizenship.
