One way to extend your stay in the U.S. is by applying for an adjustment of status. This application is filed with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This application can be used to adjust an individual’s status from one nonimmigrant visa category to another nonimmigrant visa category. The individual must meet all requirements for the new visa and must demonstrate that they have a legitimate reason for needing to extend their stay in the U.S. In South Carolina, individuals who would like to become a citizen must apply for citizenship through naturalization. Naturalization is when a person who is not a U.S. citizen voluntarily goes through a process of becoming a U.S. citizen.
