What is the naturalization oath?
The Naturalization Oath is a statement that all immigrants must recite in order to become an official United States citizen. The oath is administered by a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer as part of the naturalization process. Reciting the oath and signing the document are important steps in becoming a U.S. citizen. In California, the Naturalization Oath is sworn by all applicants for naturalization. The oath includes nine main points: renouncing any prior loyalty to a foreign nation; acknowledging the United States Constitution and the laws of the United States; taking an oath to support the U.S. Constitution; supporting and defending the Constitution and the laws of the United States; taking up arms in defense of the United States if necessary; performing noncombatant services in the Armed Forces of the United States if required; doing work of national importance under civilian direction when required; bearing true faith and allegiance to the United States; and swearing to deny allegiance to any foreign nation. The oath is a solemn promise that all naturalized citizens are required to make. It is a commitment to abide by the laws and principles of the United States, to be loyal to its government, and to serve its people. This solemn vow is a pledge of loyalty and a public declaration of one’s commitment to the United States.
