What is the naturalization oath?

The naturalization oath is the final step to becoming a United States citizen after completing the initial citizenship application. In South Carolina, the naturalization oath is administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and is taken before a USCIS officer or an immigration judge. The oath is a promise to the United States that the applicant will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States and will obey the laws of the United States and support and defend the Constitution of the United States. It also includes a pledge to renounce loyalty to any foreign nation or sovereignty to which the applicant owes allegiance. The applicant must also affirm that they understand and will be able to read, write, and speak words in ordinary usage in the English language. Those who cannot meet the language requirement can become a citizen with the provision that they will be able to read, write, and speak simple words and phrases in English and can demonstrate basic knowledge of the United States’ history and principles of government. A USCIS officer must certify the applicant’s understanding of the naturalization oath and the applicant must sign the Oath of Allegiance document. Once the applicant takes the oath, they formally become a citizen of the United States. They can then immediately apply for a passport, register to vote in elections, and apply for social security and other benefits.
