What is the citizenship ceremony?

The citizenship ceremony is a formal event held for those who have successfully met all the requirements to become a U.S. citizen. The ceremony is typically held in a courtroom or other setting where government officials, such as a judge, administer the Oath of Allegiance to the new citizens. During the ceremony, new citizens pledge their loyalty to the country, renounce allegiance to any other country, and affirm their desire to defend and support the U.S. Constitution. Those who become U.S. citizens through naturalization also receive a Certificate of Naturalization, which serves as proof of their citizenship. In Pennsylvania, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) conducts citizenship ceremonies at courthouse locations throughout the state. During the ceremony, USCIS officials administer the Oath of Allegiance to the new citizens and present them with a Certificate of Naturalization. Afterward, new U.S. citizens and their families celebrate their accomplishments and can then apply for a U.S. passport, register to vote, and enjoy all the rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship.
