How do I become a legal permanent resident?

In order to become a legal permanent resident in Washington, an individual must apply for a Green Card (also known as a Permanent Resident Card). To apply for a Green Card, an individual must first determine their eligibility. Generally, an individual may be eligible for a Green Card if they have an approved petition from a relative or employer in the United States, have been granted asylum or refugee status, or are participating in a Special Immigration Program. Once an individual has determined their eligibility, they must file an Application for Permanent Residence (Form I-485). This form requires detailed information about the individual’s identity and immigration history. Additionally, there are a number of documents that must be submitted with the application, including proof of identity, evidence of the individual’s legal stay in the United States, and proof of income. After an individual has submitted their application, they may be asked to attend an interview at a local U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office. During the interview, an USCIS officer will review the individual’s application and ask questions to determine their eligibility for a Green Card. If the individual is approved, they will receive their Legal Permanent Resident Card. This card allows them to permanently reside and work in the United States. After five years of continuous residency, legal permanent residents may be eligible to apply for naturalized citizenship.
