What is the US immigration process?
The US immigration process is the administrative procedure by which a person seeks to become a citizen of the United States. It is regulated by the US Department of Homeland Security and comprises three main stages: inspection, application, and adjudication. Inspection is the first step in the process. People seeking to become US citizens are required to go through immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for a possible medical examination. At this time, ICE will assess the individual’s travel documentation, biometric information and identity. The second stage in the US immigration process is the application. Depending on the individual’s circumstances, they might need to fill out an application for legal permanent residency, refugee status, or citizenship. This application will include information about the individual’s background, family, employment, and criminal history. The last stage is adjudication. This is when an officer from Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) reviews the individual’s application and makes a decision about whether the applicant is eligible to become a US citizen. During this stage, CIS will also process the applicant’s documents, such as identity verification and background checks. Once the CIS has approved the application, the individual can take part in a naturalization ceremony, pledging allegiance to the US Constitution to officially become a US citizen. In California, this ceremony is typically performed in a courtroom or public assembly.
