What is the process for obtaining a work permit?
In New Mexico, obtaining a work permit is a multi-step process. First, an individual must prove that he or she is eligible for a work permit. This may include providing evidence of legal presence in the United States, such as a valid passport or green card. Second, the individual must complete an Application for Employment Authorization (Form I-765). This form requests information about the individual’s employment history, education, and any special skills or abilities they may have. This form also requires a filing fee and copies of any proof of eligibility, such as a valid passport or green card. Third, the individual must submit the completed Form I-765 to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for processing. USCIS will then review the application and contact the individual if they have any questions or need additional information. Once the application is approved, the individual will receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). This document is proof that the individual is eligible to work in New Mexico and must be presented to employers. All individuals seeking employment in New Mexico must also remember to apply for a Social Security Number and obtain a state-issued job visa. These documents are both necessary to afford an individual the ability to work in the state. By following these steps, an individual should be able to obtain a work permit and be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in New Mexico.
