What is the process for applying for naturalization?

In order to apply for naturalization in New York, an individual must meet certain requirements and go through a multi-step process. The first step in the process is to determine if you are eligible to apply. To be eligible to apply for naturalization, an applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have held a Green Card for at least 5 years. The applicant must also have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years prior to filing, have been living in the same district or state for at least 3 months before filing, demonstrate good moral character, and demonstrate an understanding of the English language and U.S. government and history. Next, the individual must complete an Application for Naturalization (USCIS Form N-400). Along with the application, the applicant must submit proof of identity and Green Card status, as well as the applicable filing fee. Upon completion of the application, the applicant must attend an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer. The interview will include questions about the individual’s application and background, and may require the applicant to take an English language and civics exam. If the applicant successfully passes the interview, he/she will receive a letter in the mail with instructions on attending a naturalization ceremony. This ceremony can take place at the local USCIS office, a federal courthouse, or even an immigrants’ rights event. At this event, the individual will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and officially become a U.S. Citizen.
