What is a re-entry permit?

A Re-entry Permit is a document issued by the United States government that allows permanent residents, commonly referred to as “green card” holders, to re-enter the United States after traveling abroad for more than a year. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the agency that issues Re-entry Permits. A Re-entry permit is necessary for permanent residents who wish to travel abroad for extended periods of time, as their green cards become invalid if they are gone for more than one year. The permit should be applied for prior to leaving the United States, and it must be valid for the duration of the trip. When applying for a Re-entry Permit in Pennsylvania, applicants must submit a Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document) and evidence to support their claim that they are permanent residents and that they plan to re-enter the United States. Additionally, applicants are required to pay a fee. Once approved, the Re-entry Permit is valid for two years. To re-enter the United States, the permit must be presented at the port of entry. If the permit expires while the holder is still abroad, an application for a new one must be made. In Pennsylvania, it is important to comply with all immigration laws in order to maintain the status of permanent residency. Having a valid Re-entry Permit is part of that process, as it enables an individual to travel abroad for extended periods of time and later re-enter the United States.
