The process for becoming a U.S. citizen in New Mexico is the same as in other U.S. states. The first step is for the individual to become a legal permanent resident (LPR) of the United States. The individual will also be asked to provide a copy of his or her green card (if applicable). The final step is to attend an in-person interview with USCIS. During the interview, the applicant must answer questions about his or her background and demonstrate that he or she has sufficient knowledge of U.S. government and history. After the interview, USCIS may ask for additional documents or evidence before making a decision. If approved, individuals will be invited to take the Oath of Allegiance, at which point they will officially become U.S. citizens.
