What is the process for becoming a U.S. citizen?

The process for becoming a U.S. citizen in New Mexico is the same as in other U.S. states. The first step is for the individual to become a legal permanent resident (LPR) of the United States. This can be done through family-based, employment-based, investment-based, humanitarian-based, and some other eligible means. Once the individual is an LPR, he or she must meet the following requirements before proceeding to the next step: have resided in the U.S. for at least five years (three years for those married to a U.S. citizen); and be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the English language by passing a language test. After meeting these requirements, the next step is to file an application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This is known as Form N-400. This form will ask for a variety of personal and financial information, as well as two passport-style photographs. The individual will also be asked to provide a copy of his or her green card (if applicable). The final step is to attend an in-person interview with USCIS. During the interview, the applicant must answer questions about his or her background and demonstrate that he or she has sufficient knowledge of U.S. government and history. After the interview, USCIS may ask for additional documents or evidence before making a decision. If approved, individuals will be invited to take the Oath of Allegiance, at which point they will officially become U.S. citizens.
