How do I become a U.S. permanent resident?
In order to become a U.S. permanent resident, one must go through a process known as “lawful permanent residency.” This process begins with the submission of a petition to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Generally, the petition is submitted by a family member or employer. Once the application is accepted, the applicant will need to go through an interview process and provide evidence to demonstrate they are eligible for permanent residency. The evidence needed to prove permanent residency eligibility usually includes proof of identity and birth, proof of any legal claims to U.S. citizenship or permanent residencies, proof of lawful entry into the country, and other documentation as needed. In addition to this, the USCIS will require a biometrics appointment where they will take a photo and other biometric information. In order for an application to become a permanent resident in New Hampshire, there are also certain requirements the applicant must meet. These include having a job offer or other financial means to support oneself, having a clean criminal history, possessing all necessary documents to prove identity and the ability to read, write, understand, and speak basic English. Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive a green card which will signify their lawful permanent residency status. With this card, one can live and work in the United States while applying for citizenship after a minimum of five years of residency in the United States.
