What is the process for obtaining an immigrant visa?
The process of obtaining an immigrant visa for the state of Utah involves several steps. First, an individual must determine that they meet the criteria set by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This includes having an approved petition, such as a family or employment-based petition, or being selected for the diversity visa lottery. After this is determined, the individual must fill out the visa application and pay the appropriate application fee. Next, the applicant must schedule and attend a biometrics appointment to provide fingerprints and a photo. This will be used for a background check by USCIS. After the biometrics appointment, the individual will be asked to attend an interview with a consular officer. The consular officer will assess the individual’s eligibility for the visa and ask questions to ascertain that all information provided is accurate. Once the interview is complete, the individual will be notified of their visa status. If approved, the individual will receive an immigrant visa that contains a photograph for identification. The visa must then be presented to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at a port of entry. If approved, the officer will grant the immigrant admission into the United States as a lawful permanent resident.
