What is the process for obtaining a re-entry permit?
In Washington, the process for obtaining a re-entry permit will depend on your citizenship status. For U.S. citizens, the re-entry permit is issued for a two-year period and must be obtained before departing the United States. The permit can be obtained by submitting Form I-131 Application for a Re-entry Permit to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In the form, you will need to provide details of your past and current travels, including locations, length and purpose of trips. You will also need to provide proof of your U.S. citizenship, such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate, and provide evidence of your intent to return to the U.S. after the period of travel. This evidence may include proof of employment, family ties, or any other evidence of close ties to the United States. For non-citizens, the re-entry permit is known as a Returning Resident Visa and must be obtained before departing the U.S. To obtain a Returning Resident Visa, you must submit Form DS-117 Application for Returning Resident Visa to the U.S. Department of State. Similar to the re-entry permit, you will need to provide evidence of your intent to return to the U.S. after the period of travel. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you did not abandon your U.S. residence, and provide evidence that you have kept your legal status during the absence. Once the application is approved, you will need to undergo an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate before departing the U.S. in order to receive your re-entry permit.
