What is the process for obtaining a green card?
In order to get a green card in Hawaii, you must first be admitted into the United States with either a visa or other means. Once you are in the US and if you qualify for one, you can apply for permanent residence, or a green card. Depending on the category you fall under and the specific provisions that apply to you, you can apply for a green card in any of the two following ways: 1. Through Adjustment of Status. This means you are already in the US and you apply for a green card without having to leave the US. You must meet the requirements of the category you are applying under. 2. Through Consular Processing. For this, you must first apply for a visa at the US embassy or consulate in your home country. Once you obtain the visa, you must enter the US. During their interview at the port of entry, they will be issued the green card. No matter how you apply, you must provide proof of your eligibility with documents and paperwork, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, as well as evidence of work or family sponsorship. You must also pay a filing fee and provide a photograph. It is important to note that some categories of immigrants, such as green card lottery winners, are not allowed to apply for an adjustment of status. In such cases, they must go through the consular processing. Additionally, all applicants must pass security and medical clearances, as well as other screening processes such as criminal checks. Once all requirements are met, the immigration officers will make a final decision on the green card application.
