What is an immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a document that allows a foreign national to enter the United States with the intention of living and working permanently. It is issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate. In Delaware, the Office of Immigrant Services is the primary source of information about immigrant visas, including eligibility criteria and application procedures. Immigrant visas can be divided into two categories: family-based and employment-based. Family-based visas are available to individuals who have close family members who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Employment-based visas are available to individuals who have job offers in the United States. In addition, there are a few other categories of immigrant visas, such as certain humanitarian programs and special immigrants. In order to obtain an immigrant visa, an applicant must meet all of the eligibility requirements for the specific visa category, undergo a medical examination, and complete an application process that includes interviews, security checks, and biometrics collection. Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive their immigrant visa and will be allowed to enter the United States. After entry, the applicant may apply for lawful permanent resident status and then, eventually, for citizenship.
