What is a non-immigrant visa?

A non-immigrant visa is a type of visa given to individuals seeking to enter the United States for a temporary period of time. Non-immigrant visas are often used by those looking to work, study, conduct business, or visit the United States for vacation. In California, non-immigrant visas are issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). To apply for a non-immigrant visa, the applicant must fill out Form DS-160 which is the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application and provide the required supporting documentation. Individuals applying for a non-immigrant visa must show that they have a valid reason for entering the United States and that they are not intending to stay permanently. They must also prove that they will be able to support themselves financially during their stay, and intend to obey all U.S. laws. Finally, all applicants must pass an interview with the USCIS. If the applicant is approved, they will receive a visa in their passport. This visa will allow them to enter the United States and stay for a determined period of time. Depending on the type of visa and the circumstances of the individual, they may be able to renew the visa and/or change their visa status while in the United States.
