What is the difference between a visa and a green card?
A visa and a green card are two very important documents in regards to an individual’s immigration status in the state of Kansas. Both documents are necessary for those looking to move to the state. A visa is a document that permits an individual to enter the United States for a specific purpose, such as study, work, vacation, or medical treatment. Visas are typically issued by the U.S. Department of State and can be granted by a consular officer at a United States Embassy or Consulate. A green card is a document that serves as a permanent resident of the United States. It is issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). With a green card, an individual is allowed to live and work in the United States permanently. The key difference between a visa and a green card is that a visa is meant for short-term visits with an end date, while a green card allows the holder to live and work permanently in the United States. To obtain a green card, applicants may need to obtain a visa first. This is done by filing an I-140 petition with USCIS.
