What is the process for changing or adjusting my status?
If you are currently living in Kansas and need to apply to change or adjust your status, you must first file an application with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Depending on the type of status you are attempting to change or adjust, you may need to submit different forms and documentation. Generally, all applicants must fill out Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. Additionally, applicants must also submit evidence showing their legal entry into the United States and/or their ability to adjust their status. This includes, but is not limited to, a passport, birth certificate, visa, or I-94. Once the application is received, it will be reviewed and if all the necessary forms and documentation have been provided, you will be scheduled an interview with an immigration officer. During the interview, the officer will review the application and ask questions to determine if the applicant is eligible for the status change or adjustment. If approved, you will receive a notice in the mail and may need to pay any applicable fees. If your application is denied, the USCIS will notify you of the denial and provide you with information on what to do next. Depending on why your application was denied, you may be able to file an appeal or motion to reconsider the decision. In some cases, you may even be able to file a new application. It is important to note that the process for changing or adjusting status can be complex and time-consuming. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you seek legal advice from a qualified lawyer or organization with experience in immigration matters.
