How do I replace a lost green card?

Most people in the United States with lawful permanent resident status, commonly known as having a “green card,” are required to carry their card with them at all times. If it is lost, stolen, or destroyed, the individual must notify the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) immediately. To replace a lost green card in Florida, you must file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, with the USCIS office. The form must include detailed proof of your identity and your current U.S. address. The form can be filed online or sent by regular mail. It is also important to include a photocopy of the front and back of the green card, if you have it. Once the form is received, you will be contacted by the local USCIS office, or a service center, to schedule an appointment. At the appointment, you will need to produce 2 passport-style photos, identity documents, and any documents that prove your legal permanent resident status. The USCIS will also verify your fingerprints. It typically takes between 6-12 weeks to get your replacement green card. However, this timeline can be extended depending on the workload of the USCIS office. While for most people the green card remains valid until its expiration date, it is important to have a valid one in your possession at all times.
