What are the procedures for naturalization?

Naturalization is the process by which a person becomes a U.S. citizen after meeting eligibility requirements. In order to become a naturalized citizen in Hawaii, an individual must first meet the basic requirements of U.S. Immigration Law. The individual must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid Green Card, and have been lawfully admitted to the United States. In addition, the individual must have had continuous residence in the U.S. for at least five years and must have resided in Hawaii for at least three months prior to filing the naturalization application. Once the individual has met the requirements for naturalization, he or she will need to fill out a naturalization application form and file it with the local U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Hawaii. The application will then be reviewed for eligibility and accuracy. The individual will be required to submit a variety of documents, such as proof of residence, identity, two recent passport-sized photographs, and other forms, including the Declaration of Intention. The application and the accompanying documents will then be sent to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Honolulu for processing. After the application is approved, the individual will be required to attend an interview at the office. During the interview, the individual will be asked a series of questions to verify his or her eligibility for naturalization. After successfully completing the interview, the individual will be scheduled for a naturalization ceremony, and upon completion of the ceremony, will receive an official certificate of U.S. citizenship.
