What are the procedures for naturalization?

Naturalization is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. In Indiana, there are a few steps one must take to become a U.S. citizen through naturalization. First, the applicant must meet certain eligibility requirements. To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have had a green card for 5 years, or have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years. An applicant must also be a person of good moral character who is willing to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S. Once eligibility requirements are met, the applicant must fill out a naturalization application, which includes a biographic information form and fingerprinting. The applicant will also need to provide evidence of their identity, good moral character, and how long they have lived in the U.S. After the application is submitted, applicants must participate in an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer. During the interview, the USCIS officer will ask basic questions about the applicant’s background and the information provided in the application. If the application is approved, applicants must take an English language test and a civics test. Once the tests are passed, the applicant will be asked to take an oath of allegiance. Upon taking the oath of allegiance, the applicant will be granted U.S. citizenship.
