What is the process for filing an application for refugee status?

In Massachusetts, the process for filing an application for refugee status starts with submitting a Form of Application for Refugee Status (Form AR-11) to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The USCIS will then review the application to determine if the applicant is eligible for refugee status. Depending on the individual’s circumstances, they may be asked to provide additional information and documents in order to process the application. If the application is approved, the USCIS will issue the applicant a “Funds Authorization Letter”, which gives the applicant access to a refugee resettlement agency to help them with their resettlement in the US. The agency will provide the applicant with legal and other forms of assistance, as well as help them find work and housing. The applicant must then file an Application for Adjustment of Status (Form I-485). This form will help the applicant to gain lawful permanent residence in the U.S. The applicant must also submit the necessary supporting documents, such as a valid passport and proof of financial support. Finally, the applicant is interviewed with a USCIS officer to determine if they meet all the criteria to receive refugee status. After the interview, the application is then either approved, denied, or referred for further review. If the application is approved, the applicant is granted refugee status and can then begin the process of building a new life for themselves in the US.
