What is the process for filing an application for refugee status?

In order to apply for refugee status in North Dakota, an individual must first submit an application to the U.S. Department of State (DOS). This is done through the DOS’s online system called the “Refugee Admissions Processing System” (RAPS). Once the DOS receives the application, an interview will be conducted with a USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) officer. During the interview, the applicant will need to provide proof of identity, as well as any necessary supporting documentation. The applicant will also need to answer questions about their background, family history, and any other relevant information. After the interview is complete, the applicant will receive a decision from the DOS. If approved, the applicant will be referred to the Resettlement Support Center (RSC). The RSC will provide information about where the applicant should settle in the United States. Finally, the applicant will be scheduled for travel to the United States. Once the applicant arrives in the U.S., they will be provided with medical screenings as well as assistance in finding housing, employment, and access to social services. Throughout the entire process, refugees will have access to advocates and staff members from qualified voluntary agencies who are trained in refugee assistance. These advocates will be able to help with any issues that may arise during the application process and provide important advice.
