Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a type of immigration relief available to certain individuals who came to the United States as children. It is a form of administrative relief from deportation that allows qualified applicants to remain in the United States and receive specific work authorization. Under DACA, individuals are not granted permanent residency but they may remain in the United States for a two-year period during which they are eligible to apply for work authorization. DACA is available to individuals who meet the following criteria: were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, arrived in the United States before the age of 16, have continuously resided in the United States since June 15, 2007, and were physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012. In Massachusetts, individuals granted a DACA status are eligible to receive certain forms of state-funded financial aid and certain protections from deportation. They may also apply for a driver’s license and can begin the process of naturalizing as a U.S. citizen. DACA recipients in Massachusetts are also eligible to apply for certain state-funded educational benefits, such as tuition and fee waivers and programs geared toward helping DACA recipients reach their educational and career goals.
