What is a deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA)?

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a United States immigration law that can protect young people who are in the country without proper immigration status. According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, people who are granted DACA are protected from deportation and allowed to obtain a work permit. In order to be eligible for DACA in West Virginia, the individual must have arrived in the US before they turned 16, been under the age of 31 on June 15, 2012, lived continuously in the country since June 15, 2007, and been registered in school, graduated from high school, obtained a GED certificate, or been honourably discharged from the armed forces. The individual must also not have been convicted of any serious crimes. If a person is granted DACA, they will receive protection from deportation and be given permission to obtain a valid work permit. Additionally, DACA recipients may be able to obtain a driver’s license and travel outside the US with special permission from the government. DACA is an important opportunity for young, undocumented people in West Virginia to live and work in the US legally and continue their education without fear of deportation.
