What is an affidavit of support?

An affidavit of support is a legal document that is used in immigration law in Massachusetts to prove that an individual has a financial sponsor who will be responsible for their financial support. This document is most often used by people who are seeking to immigrate to the United States. The affidavit of support establishes that a U.S. citizen or permanent resident is financially responsible for the immigrant and that he/she will provide the necessary financial support so the immigrant will not become dependent upon the government for assistance.
