What is the role of the National Labor Relations Board?

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is a federal agency that enforces the legal protections given to workers in the United States. It is responsible for protecting employees’ rights to unionize, bargain collectively, and take part in other forms of “concerted activities” for mutual aid or protection. The NLRB also hears and resolves cases concerning unfair labor practices committed by employers or unions. In Maryland, the NLRB works to ensure all workers are receiving the full legal protection afforded to them by the National Labor Relations Act, which governs industrial relationships in the United States. The NLRB is the governing body for filing and processing complaints, determining whether the complaint has merit, and then deciding what action to take. NLRB investigators may conduct investigations into unfair labor practices in Maryland. The NLRB also serves as an advocate for workers’ rights, working to protect them from retaliation or any form of discrimination. The NLRB has the power to impose sanctions, issue cease and desist orders, and grant injunctions against employers or unions that violate the rights of workers. They also have the authority to oversee elections for union representation and certify the results. The NLRB works in tandem with the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and other state and local agencies to ensure that industrial relations law is effectively enforced. The NLRB is an essential part of the process of protecting workers’ rights and ensuring fairness for all parties in the workplace.
