What is a codicil?

A codicil is a legal document that is used to amend or supplement a will. In the state of Alaska, a codicil is used to make changes to an existing will without having to completely rewrite the document. It can be used to revoke, change, or add provisions to an existing will. In order to be legally valid, a codicil must be signed and witnessed in the same manner as the original will. Codicils are commonly used when individuals want to make small changes to an existing will, such as changing the beneficiaries or the executor of the will. In some cases, they are used to amend details of the will, such as when an individual wants to change the distribution of their estate. In Alaska, any changes made to a will by a codicil must comply with the laws governing inheritance and estate planning. The codicil must be in writing and signed by the testator and witnessed by two people, and must be consistent with the existing will. In order for the codicil to be legally valid, it must also be properly filed with the local probate court, along with the original will.
