What is the difference between public and private international law?

Public international law is the body of law that governs the relations between nations and other international entities. It is composed of treaties, customs, conventions, international organizations, and other legal instruments that set out the rules that apply to interactions between countries, including trade, the environment, and the treatment of foreign nationals. Private international law, on the other hand, is concerned with the resolution of disputes which arise out of private relationships between individuals and entities situated in multiple nations. It involves looking at the applicable laws of the different countries in question and determining which laws should apply to the dispute resolution process, in order to ensure that the individuals involved get a fair hearing. In Pennsylvania, public international law is applicable, meaning that the US Constitution, federal statutes, and state laws are all applicable. Private international law, meanwhile, applies only when a dispute arises out of a private relationship between individuals in different countries, and is usually limited to determining which nation’s laws should apply to the resolution of the dispute.
