What is the difference between treaties and conventions?
Treaties and conventions are both agreements between two or more nations that are done on an international level and are binding in international law. However, they serve different purposes. Treaties are typically agreements between two or more countries that involve issues like trade, defense, or immigration. For example, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is one example of an international treaty. Conventions, on the other hand, are often broader in scope and serve to set international standards. For example, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was created to make sure that children across the world are given the same basic rights and are treated equally. Essentially, treaties are specific agreements between two or more governments, while conventions are more general agreements that set a standard for the entire international community. In Florida, there are numerous examples of both treaties and conventions, such as the Florida-Cuba Ports of Entry Treaty, which allows for the passage of ships between the two states, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which is meant to promote gender equality.
