What is the International Law of Sanctions?

International Law of Sanctions is the legal principle that states may impose penalties on other countries as a way of enforcing international law. In Indiana, the International Law of Sanctions is managed by the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, part of the Department of Justice. This office is responsible for the enforcement of U.S. foreign policy and economic sanctions against countries, organizations, individuals, or other entities considered to be in violation of the U.S. government’s foreign policy standards. Sanctions can be in the form of economic restrictions, such as restriction of imports or exports of goods, or in the form of asset freezes or travel bans, which prevent individuals or organizations from participating in certain activities. The Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana works in close coordination with other government agencies to enforce the International Laws of Sanctions. Enforcement can take many forms, such as exercise of criminal and civil judicial power, imposition of financial costs, and targeting of business interests.
