What is the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)?
The International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international agreement that defines the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion, or nationality. The CRC was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 and came into force in 1990. It is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, with 192 countries having ratified the rights of the child. The CRC is based on the belief that all children should have the right to basic necessities and protection, and that their rights should be based on the best interests of the child. Article 2 of the CRC states that all countries should respect and ensure the rights of the child, without any discrimination. The CRC outlines a wide range of rights, such as the right to life, to health care, to an education, to freedom of opinion and thought, to privacy, and to play. In Oregon, the Department of Human Services has adopted the CRC and has made sure that all children in the state have access to these rights. The department has also adopted a child welfare system, which works to ensure that all children in the state are safe and have access to the rights guaranteed to them by the CRC. Additionally, the department works with schools and communities to make sure that all children have access to their rights and are given the opportunity to live safe and healthy lives.
