What is the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW)?
The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW) is an international agreement that seeks to protect and ensure the rights of migrant workers and their families. Ratified by the United Nations in 1990, the CMW affirms the human rights of all migrant workers, regardless of their migration status. It also gives special attention to the rights of workers and their families who are particularly vulnerable, such as unaccompanied minors, those with undocumented status, and those working in the informal or black economy. Under the CMW, participating countries agree to ensure protection of the rights of migrant workers and their families, including the right to work, to equal treatment in the labor market, to fair wages and reasonable working conditions, and to family reunification. It also forbids discrimination in relation to nationality, race, gender, political opinion, religion, and language. While the CMW is in effect in over 90 countries, Nevada has not yet ratified it. Despite this, Nevada has its own laws and regulations that strive to protect the rights of migrant workers in the state. However, in many cases, there is still a need for stronger protections and regulations to ensure that migrants in Nevada have access to the same rights and protections as those established by the CMW.
