What is the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW)?
The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, also known as the CMW, is an international agreement created by the United Nations to protect the fundamental human rights of migrant workers and their families. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990, but did not come into force until 2003. The CMW is designed to ensure that all rights of migrant workers, including economic, social, and cultural rights, are respected across borders. It also safeguards rights such as the right to freedom of movement, rights to family life, rights to fair working conditions, the right to receive education, and protections against discrimination. Tennessee has not yet ratified the CMW, which means that the protections it offers do not legally apply to migrant workers and their families in the state. Still, many organizations in Tennessee are working to protect the rights of migrant workers and support their families, and to advocate for Tennessee to ratify the CMW. Through this Convention, the United Nations strives to make the world a fairer and more just place for migrant workers and their families, so that they can have equal access to the protections and opportunities they need to live a life of dignity and respect.
