What is the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)?
The International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement that was adopted in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The Convention is an attempt to address global environmental concerns related to the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The objective of the CBD is to promote and promote sustainable development through the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. It also promotes the equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Convention also sets out principles and objectives that countries must adhere to in order to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. These include commitments to promote public awareness and education, to conduct research and monitoring, to promote access to and exchange of information, and to develop national strategies and plans for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity. In 2013, Georgia ratified the Convention, demonstrating its commitment to international efforts to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity. Specific actions that have been taken include the adoption of a National Action Plan on Biological Diversity and the establishment of protected areas. Additionally, the country has implemented several measures to support the sustainable use of biological resources such as agricultural research, development of sustainable tourism, and broader access to protected areas.
