What is the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)?
The International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement which aims to protect and conserve biological diversity around the world. It was signed by the United Nations in 1992 and came into force in 1993. The Convention focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, the exchange of resources, and the equitable sharing of benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. It applies to all countries, whether they have signed the Convention or not. The Convention also provides a framework for governments to cooperate in the management of resources, especially in marine and coastal ecosystems. The Convention is divided into three main parts. The first part sets out the objectives of the Convention which include the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The second part provides a framework for the implementation and enforcement of these objectives. The third part contains the provisions related to financial resources and transfer of technology for countries that have signed the Convention. The Convention is an important tool for protecting and preserving biodiversity in Tennessee and around the world. It is also an important instrument in the development of international law and in the protection of the environment.
