What is the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)?
The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty outlining the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of persons with disabilities. The CRPD is the first of its kind, setting international standards for protecting the rights of people with disabilities in all aspects of life. The CRPD was created to recognize and strengthen the human rights of persons with disabilities and promote their dignity, independence and self-determination. It outlines the rights of persons with disabilities, including access to education, health, employment, and housing, as well as the right to live, to move, and to participate in society. The CRPD also calls for equal recognition before the law, and an end to discrimination based on disability. The CRPD was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2006, and entered into force in May 2008. This treaty is currently in force in 135 countries, including the United States. In Tennessee, the state has taken a few steps towards implementing the CRPD, such as enacting legislation promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and creating programs to meet the needs of people with disabilities.
