What is the International Convention for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW)?

The International Convention for the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW) is a United Nations treaty, ratified in 1990, that sets out the rights of migrant workers and members of their families regardless of their immigration status. The underlying principle of the CMW is that all migrant workers and members of their families are entitled to respect for their human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal footing with other members of society. The CMW states that all migrant workers and their family members should enjoy: the right to humane treatment; protection from abuse and exploitation; access to justice; the right to work; the right to form and join trade unions; the right to an adequate standard of living; access to health care and social security; the right to education; and the right to enjoy their own culture and practice their own religion. In Nevada, the CMW has been implemented into state law and there are various organizations and agencies that have been formed to ensure the rights of migrant workers and members of their families are respected and protected. Additionally, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) offers free job placement services to migrant workers in the state.
