What is the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)?

The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an international court of law based in The Hague in the Netherlands. It was set up in 1993 by the United Nations Security Council in response to the conflicts that arose in the former Yugoslavia. The ICTY is responsible for prosecuting individuals accused of serious international crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity that occurred in the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2001. The ICTY is not a court of criminal law and does not have jurisdiction over every crime that may have been committed in the former Yugoslavia during this period. Rather, it has jurisdiction over those crimes that are considered to be of an international character. The court has jurisdiction to prosecute individuals accused of violations of international humanitarian law, which includes war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. The court is also responsible for prosecuting persons accused of serious violations of international human rights law. The ICTY has issued more than 2,000 indictments since its establishment in 1993. It has held more than 210 trials and handed down more than 160 judgements. The court delivered its final judgement in 2017 and is now winding down its operations. The ICTY has made an important contribution to international criminal justice by helping to bring justice to those accused of serious international crimes. It has also provided a crucial forum for victims of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia to seek justice and redress for abuses suffered.
