What is the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)?
The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an international court that was set up by the United Nations Security Council in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes committed during the war in the former Yugoslavia, which took place between 1991 and 2001. It has the authority to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The ICTY is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and the court proceedings take place in both English and French. The ICTY is composed of an Appeals Chamber, Trial Chamber, and Pre-Trial Chamber. These Chambers make decisions on legal matters and also decide the sentences for those found guilty. In North Carolina, the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia is not directly involved, however, the state does recognize the decision made by the ICTY. This means that individuals who are found guilty by the ICTY and are living in North Carolina must obey the decision of the ICTY. In some cases, an individual who is found guilty by the ICTY may also be tried in a North Carolina court of law. The ICTY is important because it holds individuals accountable for their actions during a war and helps to bring justice to those who have been subjected to serious crimes. It also serves as an example to the international community of the importance of upholding international law.
