What is the International Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (CWC)?

The International Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction (CWC) is an international treaty that seeks to eliminate the use of chemical weapons and eliminate stockpiles of chemical weapons in any state. The CWC was adopted by the United Nations in 1993, and requires all signatories to have measures in place to prevent the unauthorized acquisition and use of chemical weapons. The primary requirements of the Convention include the destruction of all chemical weapons stockpiles, the cessation of further development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons, and the adoption of measures that will ensure proper safety and security of remaining chemical weapons stockpiles. In addition, the Convention calls for all signatory countries to establish international cooperation in the field of chemical weapons control, as well as to provide assistance and protection to countries that are victimized by the use of chemical weapons. In terms of Alaska, the Convention applies since each member of the United Nations is a signatory. Therefore, all CWC obligations apply to Alaska, and chemical weapons are prohibited from being developed, produced, stockpiled or used in the state. Furthermore, the Alaska Department of Public Safety has the responsibility of implementing the Convention, and is tasked with enforcing the laws pertaining to chemical weapons.
