What is the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)?

The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an agreement adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. The purpose of CEDAW is to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in all aspects of their lives, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. CEDAW includes 30 articles that address a wide range of gender-based issues, including rape, right to health care and employment, and protection from violence and abuse. It is one of the few international agreements that explicitly identifies gender as the basis for non-discrimination in all areas of life. CEDAW is an important tool to advance gender equality, as it sets out the legal and policy framework for governments to use in order to ensure women are treated equally. In Indiana, CEDAW is legally binding, meaning that Indiana is obligated to abide by the convention and promote gender equality to the best of its ability. To do so, Indiana has created laws and policies to ensure that women have access to opportunities, resources, and decision-making power that can enable them to realize their rights. The state also promotes gender equality through public awareness campaigns and implementation of gender-sensitive policies.
